Kurma is no stranger to the world of yogamats. While they may be hard to find in the U.S., you've come to the right place. With deep roots in Europe, Kurma has spent decades as practitioners, teachers, and suppliers of high-quality yoga equipment.

More than just a brand, Kurma embodies what a modern, ethically conscious yoga company should be. Their mission? To create 100% circular, toxin-free products with a minimal carbon footprint—because sustainability and mindfulness go hand in hand.

Thirty years ago, Claus Grzesch, founder of Kurma Yoga, was studying under B.K.S. Iyengar when his teacher pointed to the green non-slip carpet underlay beneath Claus’s feet and remarked, “These are very good. Made in Germany. Interesting to know.” With that passing comment, an idea was born.

Back in Germany, Claus partnered with the manufacturer to develop one of the first true yoga mats. Without any advertising, demand spread quickly as practitioners and studios worldwide sought it out.

Kurma, Sanskrit for “turtle”, symbolizes the unshakeable support of the world. According to ancient mythology, Kurma stabilized the universe during the eternal struggle of the forces of nature, heaven and the underworld. The symbolic values of reliability, support, personal connection and transformation can be found in every Kurma mat.
